A scrap metal fire in Kernersville on Sunday afternoon is producing smoke that can be seen in neighboring cities. According to a social media post from Kernersville Police Department, the large fire is at Omnisource, a metal recycling center located at 1426 West Mountain Street. After a few inches of snow fell across the Piedmont, the city of Greensboro is providing some updates on its services and how the winter weather is impacting them. According to a press release, the city has deployed snow removal crews and has made progress on primary and secondary roads. Residential roads are to be plowed next. Residual moisture after plowing could create black ice overnight, so drivers are being asked to take caution.

Watauga County officials say two residents were killed by landslides after Helene swept through mountain communities. Numerous other injuries have been attributed to the storm or clean-up efforts. With the possibility of significant rainfall in the coming days as Hurricane Helene approaches, the city of Winston-Salem offered some basic storm preparedness advice during a press conference on Wednesday. City officials say they’re in “monitoring mode” as they keep an eye on the weather over the next one to three days. The suspect in Sunday’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump has ties to Greensboro. Fifty-eight-year-old Ryan Wesley Routh is registered as an unaffiliated voter in North Carolina. Routh voted in this year’s Democratic primary in Guilford County, and the state Board of Elections website lists Routh with a Greensboro street address.
