EATON — The City of Eaton is asking residents to assist in a community-wide effort to identify and replace lead and galvanized drinking water service lines as part of a proactive public health and infrastructure improvement initiative. From April 23 to April 26, City of Eaton Public Works representatives will be visiting neighborhoods to perform brief, five-minute inspections of water service lines made of unknown materials.

PREBLE COUNTY — A culvert replacement on Ohio 726 in Preble County will get under way later this month, and a five-day closure of the route will be in effect. On Monday, April 28, crews from the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Preble County Maintenance facility will close Ohio 726 near Bantas Fork, at the 2.1-mile marker, for a culvert replacement project. The closure will be in effect through Friday, May 2, and while the route is closed, motorists will be detoured via U.S. 40 and U.S 127.

GRATIS — Voters in Gratis Township will decide on Tuesday, May 6, whether to approve a 3-mill tax levy aimed at maintaining 24/7 emergency medical service coverage through Gratis EMS. The proposed levy would cost homeowners approximately $105 annually per $100,000 of assessed property value — or an estimated $8.75 per month.

COLUMBUS — America 250-Ohio, the official state commission responsible for spearheading Ohio’s celebrations and commemorations around America’s semiquincentennial in 2026, announced last week it awarded grants of up to $5,000 each to 57 organizations across the state of Ohio, for a total of $278,834. In Southwest Ohio, 11 organizations received grants. One of those was the Preble County Historical Society.

EATON — The Preble County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash which occurred Wednesday night, April 16, on Ohio 122, just south of Yost Road. According to Sheriff Mike Simpson, deputies were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:52 p.m. A preliminary investigation determined that a 2022 Jeep driven by Brian Rowe, 53, of Germantown, was traveling southbound on Ohio 122 when it was struck by a 2016 Nissan traveling northbound and driven by Spencer Hunt, 22, of Eaton.
