Oklahoma pitcher Kyson Witherspoon was great. Kade Anderson was better. The Louisiana State lefty was masterful in the opener on Thursday night, striking out a career-high 14 in a complete game 2-0 shutout of Oklahoma. It’s the first complete game shutout for the Tigers since some guy named Paul Skenes did so two years ago. Not too shabby. For Oklahoma, it was a frustrating night offensively. Anderson worked up and down the Sooners lineup, tossing a career-high 135 pitches.

There’s going to be tougher competition. There’s going to be bigger games. But for now Oklahoma baseball is unbeaten and off to the program’s best start since 2011. Skip Johnson’s crew improved to 11-0 on Sunday with a come from behind 3-2 win over CSUN, sweeping the weekend series, outscoring the Matadors 22-4. Sophomore left-hander Cam Johnson went 5.1 innings allowing two runs on three hits, four walks and four punchouts.

Following Oklahoma baseball’s monster weekend in Round Rock, it would have been easy for a lackadaisical showing when the nationally ranked Sooners returned to L. Dale Mitchell Ballpark for the start of a two-game series against Texas Southern. Far from. Quite the opposite actually. Oklahoma scored early and often in a 15-4 run-rule of Texas Southern, sending 10 to the plate in a seven-run second, highlighted by a pair of three-run bombs from Jaxon Willits and Sam Christiansen.

Skip to main contentIf OU baseball’s weekend trip to Round Rock was viewed as something of a barometer to see how they stacked up against two of the nation’s best? Whew. The statement was loud. Oklahoma rallied to knock off No. 7 Oregon State 8-4 on Saturday and backed that up with a marathon walk-off win over No. 2 Virginia 5-4 in 12 innings taking home the Round Rock Classic title. But it wasn’t just the fact Oklahoma improved to 6-0, marking the program’s best start since 2019.
