Losing a loved one to violence is heartbreaking. Not receiving justice for their murder deepens that pain. Many families in Milwaukee, including mine, understand this feeling. From 2020 to 2024, more than 900 murders occurred in Milwaukee, several hundred of which remain unsolved. It’s been over seven years since the release of the Blueprint for Peace, a novel plan to help reduce violence in a city long plagued by it. “If we don’t own this, if we don’t make this a part of our DNA, part of our fabric as a community, it’s not going to succeed,” then-Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett said during a news conference to announce the plan. “But I believe we can do this.”Years later, leaders have begun plans to update the Blueprint for Peace.

Since the Community Collaborative Commission was established in 2019 to help improve policing in Milwaukee, one of its greatest successes was to work with the Milwaukee Police Department to revise the standard operating procedures for community-oriented policing. The changes, made effective on May 26, 2023, reaffirmed the MPD’s commitment to incorporating community-oriented policing principles into its training, policies and standard procedures.
