Salt Lake City made national news when Mayor Erin Mendenhall proposed that the city officially adopt the LGBTQ+ pride, trans and Juneteenth flags. It was a response to a new state law that defines which flags can fly on public buildings. Boise, Idaho, made the same move, but Salt Lake had a twist. The city added sego lilies. This is not the first time the humble sego lily has played a role in local and national politics.

Novelist Viet Thanh Nguyen was very young when his family fled Vietnam in 1975. So being a refugee, to him, is “completely tied up with my memory and my identity.”His family, along with 22,000 other Vietnamese and Cambodian refugees, ended up at Fort Indiantown Gap in Pennsylvania. In order to leave the camp, they each had to have an American sponsor. “There wasn't an American family or church willing to sponsor all four of us,” Nguyen explained.

Utah is scheduled to execute Taberon Honie by lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. on Aug. 8, 2024. Honie was sentenced to death for the 1998 murder of Claudia Benn, his ex-girlfriend’s mother. He broke into her Cedar City home and brutally slashed and stabbed her. Her grandchildren, including Honie’s 2-year-old daughter, were in the house at the time. It will mark the state’s eighth execution since 1977 after a federal moratorium was lifted on the death penalty.

On Saturday, it was an otherwise normal evening in Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park. Families picnicked. Couples walked their dogs. Friends gathered to take their mindsoff the heat. Eighteen hundred miles away, the 2024 presidential election was upended by gunfire at a Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The suspected shooter, identified as, was able to get surprisingly close. He attacked from the rooftop of a nearby building outside the rally and was killed by the Secret Service.
