President Donald Trump has been busy. Since taking office in January, tariffs, budget cuts across agencies and the administration’s campaign to crack down on illegal immigration and increase deportations have been at the top of the news cycle. Not to mention moves against public and private universities and the hundreds of lawsuits challenging Trump’s directives. Despite Utah’s status as a red state that supported Trump in 2024, it hasn’t been spared.

The state legislature passed a law banning cellphones in Utah classrooms with almost unanimous support this year. However, this isn’t the first time lawmakers have tried to address phone use in schools. What changed was their approach to the issue. “We've got more studies, more data, more parents and more teachers upset with cellphone use in school,” Republican Rep. Trevor Lee said.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the Trump administration’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, paid a visit to Utah to celebrate new laws that championed his Make America Healthy Again movement. Kennedy has gained notoriety for questioning the safety of vaccines and a presidential campaign centered around conspiracy theories. His response to the measles outbreak in Texas is also under scrutiny. The Utah efforts he applauded, though, mirror policies he is pushing for nationally.

About 43% of Utah’s population drinks fluoridated water. The bulk of those residents are in Salt Lake and Davis counties, where voters approved the practice in 2000. That will change on May 7.
