    SINGAPORE – A Geylang Road laundromat saw such brisk business during the recent wet weather that two of its dryers and a coin changer broke down. The laundromat, Kaki Laundry, swiftly repaired the machines and put them back into service. The laundry outlet saw a nearly twofold increase in revenue between Jan 10 and Jan 13, compared with the week before, as people flocked there to dry their clothes. Laundromats are among businesses here that have seen takings go up during the current monsoon season.

    SINGAPORE - Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out in a Housing Board flat in Punggol on Jan 14 night. About 60 other people were also evacuated from their homes in the neighbouring units. The fire at 229A Sumang Lane “involved an overheated cooking stove in the unit”, and was extinguished the fire with a water jet, said SCDF, which added that it was alerted to the incident at 11.05pm.

    SINGAPORE - A 79-year-old man was injured after his car skidded and crashed into a fence near Bukit Batok West Shopping Centre on Jan 14. The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident along Bukit Batok Street 11 in the direction of Bukit Batok West Avenue 6 at about 12pm. The car was believed to have self-skidded, police said.

    SINGAPORE - A man who rode a motorcycle without a valid licence was arrested after he fled from a Traffic Police officer on the KJE on the morning of Jan 6. The police said they signalled the 22-year-old man to stop on the KJE to BKE at 11.30am for a routine check but he did not stop and sped off instead. His pillion passenger later jumped off the bike on the BKE slip road towards Bukit Panjang Road and fled on foot.
