Laundromats see brisk business amid monsoon surge

SINGAPORE – A Geylang Road laundromat saw such brisk business during the recent wet weather that two of its dryers and a coin changer broke down. The laundromat, Kaki Laundry, swiftly repaired the machines and put them back into service. The laundry outlet saw a nearly twofold increase in revenue between Jan 10 and Jan 13, compared with the week before, as people flocked there to dry their clothes. Laundromats are among businesses here that have seen takings go up during the current monsoon season.

SINGAPORE - Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire broke out in a Housing Board flat in Punggol on Jan 14 night. About 60 other people were also evacuated from their homes in the neighbouring units. The fire at 229A Sumang Lane “involved an overheated cooking stove in the unit”, and was extinguished the fire with a water jet, said SCDF, which added that it was alerted to the incident at 11.05pm.
Driver, 79, injured after car crashes into fence in Bukit Batok

SINGAPORE - A 79-year-old man was injured after his car skidded and crashed into a fence near Bukit Batok West Shopping Centre on Jan 14. The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the accident along Bukit Batok Street 11 in the direction of Bukit Batok West Avenue 6 at about 12pm. The car was believed to have self-skidded, police said.
Motorcyclist arrested after evading traffic police on KJE; pillion rider jumps off and flees on foot

SINGAPORE - A man who rode a motorcycle without a valid licence was arrested after he fled from a Traffic Police officer on the KJE on the morning of Jan 6. The police said they signalled the 22-year-old man to stop on the KJE to BKE at 11.30am for a routine check but he did not stop and sped off instead. His pillion passenger later jumped off the bike on the BKE slip road towards Bukit Panjang Road and fled on foot.
Man injured after cars collide in Bedok Reservoir Road

SINGAPORE - A 49-year-old man was injured after the car he was driving collided with another car near Telok Kurau Primary School on Jan 10. The police said they were alerted to the accident involving two cars in Bedok Reservoir Road at 11.30am. The 49-year-old man was conscious when taken to the hospital. The other driver, a 70-year-old man, is assisting with investigations, police said. In a photo shared on social media, a navy car is seen partially mounted on a kerb, near a pedestrian walkway.
North-South Line MRT services delayed due to train fault during peak hour

SINGAPORE - Train commuters travelling between Marina South Pier and Bishan will have their journeys delayed due to a train fault on the North-South Line during peak hour on Jan 10. In a Facebook post at 5.59pm, train operator SMRT advised commuters to add 20 minutes to their travelling time. At 6.04pm, it revised the delay to 25 minutes. It added that there will be free regular bus services between Marina South Pier and Toa Payoh.
Man arrested for drug, drink driving offences after fleeing accident scene in Punggol

SINGAPORE - A man was arrested for suspected drink driving and drug-related offences after an accident in Punggol in the early hours of Jan 9. The police said they were alerted to the accident involving a car along Punggol Way at 6.15am and the driver left the scene before they arrived. “An e-vaporiser and substances believed to be controlled drugs were found in the car,” the police added.

In a Facebook post in the early hours of Jan 9, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at the shophouse at 10A Jalan Tampang at 8.25pm on Jan 8. Firefighters had to force their way into the shophouse, and used two water jets to contain the fire, SCDF added.

SINGAPORE - More than 8,700 bank customers were saved from losing about $73 million to conmen, when six banks tied up with the police Anti-Scam Centre and used technology to thwart scams. During a two-month joint operation between Nov 1, 2024 and Dec 31, 2024, ASC officers and the banks sent out about 13,000 SMS text messages to bank customers who were identified as potential scam victims, the police said in a statement on Jan 8.
