SINGAPORE – The WP romped to victory in its traditional strongholds of Aljunied GRC and Hougang SMC with little drama, returning its core leaders secretary-general Pritam Singh and chair Sylvia Lim to Parliament. Despite a national swing towards the ruling party, the WP five-member team in Aljunied GRC maintained its dominance over its PAP challengers to take the constituency with 59.68 per cent of the votes, to the PAP’s 40.32 per cent.

SINGAPORE - The PAP will field four new faces to contest opposition-held Aljunied GRC, the party announced on April 13. They are Dr Faisal Abdul Aziz, Mr Daniel Liu, Dr Adrian Ang and Mr Jagathishwaran Rajo. Mr Liu, Dr Ang and Dr Faisal were appointed as branch chairpersons in February, in a refresh of the party’s Aljunied slate. Ms Chan Hui Yuh, who is the only remaining member from the PAP’s 2020 slate, will lead the five-member team into the upcoming general election.

SINGAPORE - For several months now, Madam Lee has been thinking about buying a new refrigerator but she said cash has been tight. The 69-year-old homemaker lives in a semi-detached home in Frankel Estate with her husband, who is retired. While her neighbours have renovated their homes, hers remains in the same state it was when she bought it about 40 years ago. Her current fridge is old and does not work well. Madam Lee said she would like to replace the fridge, which she purchased some years back.

SINGAPORE – A Geylang Road laundromat saw such brisk business during the recent wet weather that two of its dryers and a coin changer broke down. The laundromat, Kaki Laundry, swiftly repaired the machines and put them back into service. The laundry outlet saw a nearly twofold increase in revenue between Jan 10 and Jan 13, compared with the week before, as people flocked there to dry their clothes. Laundromats are among businesses here that have seen takings go up during the current monsoon season.
