Lewiston voters rejected a $25 million bond to upgrade downtown infrastructure Tuesday, sending city officials back to the drawing board to figure out how to repair aging pipes and streets. A total of 1,968 or 62% of those who cast ballots supported the measure and 1,211 or 38% voted against it. Even though the bond received a majority of yes votes, it didn’t pass because it needed a 66.7% majority. About 18% of the city’s 17,500 registered voters went to the polls.

May 18-COLFAX - The smell of garlic sauteing on the stove permeated the dining room of Wild Ember Kitchen in Colfax at midday. The staff was preparing garlic to season tacos the restaurant had planned for a special Cinco de Mayo dinner that evening. The tacos are among the many dishes Colfax High School graduate Trevor Miller has developed for the restaurant with fellow chef and significant other Amanda Packer since the business's debut about a year ago.

May 11-Crew members watched closely as a crane lowered a more than 20-foot section of pipe into a ditch about 5 feet deep on Lewiston's D Street. Before placing the water main, the men had carefully prepared the ground, keeping an eye not to disturb surrounding utility lines, while also monitoring vibrations from machinery to avoid potential damage to nearby historic buildings.

May 4-Dozens of kids paint, build Lego bridges and play air hockey every week day at the Schweitzer Clubhouse, a renovated high school gym in Lewiston that could have been left to wither. A $2.2 million donation from Ed and Beatriz Schweitzer backed the repurposing of the former Booth Hall for the Boys and Girls Club of the Lewis Clark Valley. On Tuesday, the Schweitzers will receive the Don Poe Community Spirit Award at the Boys and Girls Club's 18th annual Breakfast for Kids.
