A DRESS worn by Princess Diana has sold for more than £900,000, breaking an auction record. She wore the black and blue Jacques Azagury gown while on a royal tour with Charles in 1985 and at a performance by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1986. It went in the US for $1,148,080 (£904,262) taking the auction sale record for the most expensive frock worn by the Princess of Wales. The dress had been estimated to fetch as little as $100,000 (£78,776).

A FORMER RAF base on a remote island yesterday became the UK’s first licensed spaceport for vertical rocket launches. The Civil Aviation Authority has approved the SaxaVord Spaceport, paving the way for its first launches in 2024. Catering for firms looking to put satellites into orbit, it will be allowed to send up 30 rockets a year. So far, £30million has been spent on the site on Unst in Scotland’s Shetland Isles — bought in 2004 by Frank and Debbie Strang.

KING Charles beat Love Island in Google’s searches of the year in its “when” category, the tech giant has revealed. Brits searched most for “When is the Coronation?” ahead of “When does Love Island start?”, it added. Also in the top ten in the category were “When is the Coronation concert?” and “When did the Queen die?”. Director Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster film Oppenheimer pipped Barbie as the most searched for film.

A HOMELESS man is believed to have frozen to death while sleeping in a car during the cold snap gripping Britain. He died as temperatures plunged towards -10C — and firefighters had to be called to cut his body free. Police officers could be seen on social media footage huddled around a black car which was covered in frost, with an ambulance parked nearby. According to residents in Beeston, Notts, the man relied on the car for warmth and shelter.

A BOOK containing mugshots of 600 crooks from more than 150 years ago is up for auction. Crimes committed by the vintage villains — some just kids — include theft of bread, coal and a cockerel, plus highway robbery. Handwritten notes accompany the snaps taken at Folkingham County Gaol, near Bourne, Lincs, between 1869 and 1882. Rupert Pink, of Batemans auctioneers, said: “Their faces are very expressive and they are all wearing their Sunday best.
