Content warning: this article discusses eating disorders and disordered behavior. As a 19-year-old woman, a lot of what I see on the internet is designed to make me feel bad about myself. I started feeling it when I first accessed the internet before I had social media. I would watch YouTube or get ads on computer games that talked about new workout fads or “healthy diets,” something that should not have been introduced to me at such a young age. One memory will always stick with me.

With Dance Production (Dance Pro) being one of the the longest-running and biggest clubs at Occidental, it’s safe to say that dance has a large prominence on campus. But, besides Occidental’s dance studio hosting Dance Pro rehearsals and PULSE classes, there are many other ways for students to strut their stuff on campus.

A line of people poured out of Thorne Hall as students, faculty and staffawaited “Laugh Your Class Off,” a night of stand-up comedy at Occidental Sept. 7. The show hostedcomedians Margaret Cho and Melissa Villaseñor, as well as three Occidental alumni — David Murphy ’02, Paul “PK” Kim ’98 and Eddie Gorton ’01 — as openers.

Student traffic circulated in and out of Keck Theater Sept. 3 and Sept. 4, buzzing with excitement. Occidental’s theater program started off the school year with auditions and callbacks throughout the week for this fall’s two plays, “Poor Clare” and “Antigone.”“Poor Clare,” written by screenwriter and playwright Chiara Atik, premiered at Atwater Village Theater produced by Echo Theater Company.

Atwater Village: Every Thursday night, Club Tee Gee in Atwater Village bursts with laughter. Welcome to the Peacock Show: a weekly independent comedy show that takes over a room in the Glendale Boulevard bar. While stand-up comedy shows come and go, the Peacock Show is that rare bird with staying power, celebrating its fifth anniversary earlier this year. Freelance comedy producers Ali Hart and Rebecca Rufer, who met through a mutual friend, started it all.

At the beginning of the fall semester, I was sitting on the AGC steps after dinner when my friend Cady told me she was attending an event to meet the womxn’s ultimate Frisbee team, “WAC.” When she asked me to come with her, I nearly laughed in her face, and anyone else who knew me then would laugh too. In high school, all my time outside of class was dedicated to theater and music, not running up and down a field trying to catch a disc.

With summer approaching, Occidental’s campus chatter buzzes with students’ summer plans. Just in time to help students achieve their dream,emails regarding jobs or internships from Handshake, the Hameetman Career Center (HCC), Oxy Arts, summer research programs and more flood students’ inboxes. One way to fund summer opportunities is through a travel grant, where students can receive financial assistance or awards to support their academic or work-related travel.

Every Thursday night, a darkly-lit Club Tee Gee in Atwater Village explodes with energy, welcoming standup comedians and a vibrant crowd. This event is the Peacock Show: a weekly independent comedy show that celebrated its five-year anniversary Feb. 29. The show originated from freelance comedy producers Ali Hart and Rebecca Rufer, both newcomers to LA with hopes of starting a show, they said.

Fiveout of 10 players on Occidental’s women’s tennis team are first-year students — they also bring in the majority of the team’s victories. In a matchup against Hope International University Feb. 10, Seb Kombo (first year) and Sydney Sasaki (first year) won an 8-6 victory in doubles. Elina Shalaev (first year) and Kristina Lee (first year) also delivered an 8-1 win.
