Miaomaio was among four students in her grade level selected for recognition. Her submission was titled “Dad and Me Exploring Wind Energy.”The 2025 National Wind Energy Art Challenge for students in kindergarten through eighth grade was sponsored by the KidWind Project.

    Two new grass multipurpose fields, the first added in decades, are closer to opening in Rancho Bernardo Community Park. On May 22, workers were installing sod in the roughly 35,000-square-foot fenced-in area, which is divided in half to form two smaller fields separated by an existing sidewalk that runs between them. The space is not likely to open until perhaps mid-July, said Mark Moncey, a San Diego Parks and Recreation area manager who was on-site while the crew installed the sod.

    Players of all skill levels are wanted for Rancho Bernardo Spirit of the Fourth’s second annual pickleball tournament. The fundraiser will be held from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Sunday, June 29 at Rancho Arbolitos Swim & Tennis Club, 14343 Silverset Street in Poway. There will be social play with rotating partners in the round robin tournament. There will also be a special prize for the best patriotic outfit, a raffle and silent auction.

    The second class of students to graduate from Poway to Palomar Middle College walked across the stage to receive their high school diplomas on May 29 at the Rancho Bernardo campus. For some of the 44 graduates, including class President Nayuka Fujikado, this was their second commencement ceremony within a week. That’s because they took enough college courses simultaneously with their high school classes to earn an associates degree from Palomar College.

    From bluegrass to Americana music and storytelling, there will be something for everyone at the annual Sam Hinton Folk Heritage Festival on Saturday, June 7 in Old Poway Park. The free festival has been presented by San Diego Folk Heritage for more than 25 years, said board member JT Moring, who compared the event to “an old-style picnic in the park.”“It is good for kids. You can dance, sit in the shade, enjoy music and wander around,” Moring said.
