    Prolific Canadian serial killer Robert Pickton is now eligible to apply for day parole, a move Conservatives say is “unacceptable.” It is the latest case putting a spotlight on Canada’s justice system and the impacts high-profile cases have on the families of victims. Pickton was charged with 26 murders for the deaths of women who disappeared from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, and was convicted of second-degree murder for six of them. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2007.

Christopher Monette, public affairs director for Teamsters Canada, said the consequences of rail disasters can be deadly, with two of his members having recently received hospital treatment for injuries sustained in a derailment near Revelstoke last Friday.

    While Vancouver Coastal Health has confirmed it’s not considering a standalone supervised drug consumption site in Richmond, hundreds protested Monday in opposition to the political process that raised the possibility one could be built. Last week, seven of nine Richmond councillors voted to ask the health authority to explore the idea as at the city’s hospital and launch a consultation process.
