RJ Aquino, chair of Filipino BC, says the number and size of makeshift memorials that have sprung up for the 11 people killed and dozens more injured have become important hubs for people to meet, grieve, and process their emotions.

B.C. trial lawyers are raising concerns that the victims and surviving family members of the Lapu Lapu tragedy may never be properly compensated. The association says that under B.C.’s no-fault insurance model, it is more difficult for victims to successfully sue for damages.

In the days since the Lapu Lapu festival tragedy, where 11 people were killed when an SUV drove into a crowd of people, hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated to victims and their families. GoFundMe has been verifying fundraisers to make sure the donated funds will benefit grieving family members and aid in recovery efforts. However, one fundraiser caught the eye of a Vancouver Filipino resident and she thought something didn’t seem right.
