The B.C. government was initially opposed to the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion but is now supporting a proposal that would allow tankers to carry more oil through B.C. waters. Trans Mountain wants to increase the volume of oil each tanker transports but that would involve dredging the Burrard Inlet to prevent heavier tankers from hitting the sea floor.

The inquest into the death of Sidney McIntyre-Starko continued on Wednesday, when a doctor from the U.S. took the stand. Dr. Michael Kurz is a physician who has written academic papers on best practices around emergency medical dispatch in the United States. He testified that in order to save lives, dispatchers need to be quicker with key questions, which Sidney McIntyre-Starko’s family says could have saved her life.

Cleaning up the wreckage of a derelict former B.C. ferry that went up in flames this weekend could take years and millions of dollars, experts say. The former Queen of Sidney was retired from BC Ferries’ fleet in 2000, and has been more on the Fraser River in Mission since it was sold in 2002 to Gerald Tapp. On Saturday morning, it was consumed by flames, sending a massive column of toxic smoke into the air and forcing hundreds of people to shelter in place.

The inquest into the drug death of an 18-year-old University of Victoria student last year heard testimony Friday from the 911 operator who handled the call. Sidney McIntyre-Starko died of fentanyl poisoning in January 2024 after she and a friend collapsed in a university dorm room after consuming drugs found in a box of coolers a friend found on a street corner.

It was an emotional day of testimony from Sidney McIntyre-Starko’s mother on the first day of the coroner’s inquest into the teen’s death. Dr. Caroline McIntyre was firm in her assertion that the overdose is not the reason for the coroner’s inquest, but the actions in the minutes afterward are the crucial piece of this puzzle. McIntyre-Starko, 18, was a student at the University of Victoria when she died in January 2024 of fentanyl poisoning.
