A police officer was shot, and a suspect is dead after a shootout in a south Raleigh neighborhood Tuesday evening. The officer suffered a "serious gunshot wound," police said in a news conference. The officer was taken to the hospital. The Raleigh Police Department said officers are investigating what led to the shootout. A massive police presence shut off access to the Rennaisance Park subdivision near the intersection of Tryon Road and Highway 70 after the shooting.

After months of fighting, Saint Augustine's University, a longstanding HBCU in downtown Raleigh, lost an appeal for its accreditation. The school, established in 1867, violated multiple policies related to structure, finance and governance, according to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), which revoked the university's accreditation back in December of last year. SACSCOC is a committee that accredits many schools in the Southeast.

Snow coated North Carolina's mountains over the long weekend and continued to fall Tuesday. Some areas, like Banner Elk and Beech Mountain, saw over a foot of snow. Schools will open on a two-hour delay as crews assess damage. Severe weather rolled across North Carolina Tuesday afternoon, knocking out power for thousands and downing trees along its way. As of 5 p.m. Tuesday, part of I-40 near Durham closed due to a crash. All lanes of I-40 West closed just before exit 274, and they are expected to reopen by 7 p.m., the DriveNC.gov website shows. According to the website, Power Outage.us, more than 60,000 are without power statewide as of about 5 p.m. The storm is causing other impacts as well.
