By the time the Eastmoreland Garden Club has their celebratory annual “Gathering in the Garden” on Saturday, May 17th, in the former golfers’ parking lot that years ago became the “Eastmoreland Garden Park”, spring will be well-advanced – and gardeners will be preparing their summer garden. At that celebration, there will be a lot to help them in that effort, as well as live music and a silent auction, and everyone in Inner Southeast is welcome to enjoy the midday there.

It loomed large and orange, over Woodstock Boulevard at S.E. 50th Avenue, for quite a few months. The orange paper is said to be a good weather barrier, and one of the many options these days for exterior walls before the final siding is applied, and so the orange is disappearing. Now, as it nears completion, the complex has been named “The Flying Ace”, a reference to the “Woodstock” character in Charles Schulz’s Peanuts cartoon; one of Snoopy’s alter egos is “The Flying Ace”.

It was Friday, October 11th, and there was no school due to a Portland Public Schools teacher-planning day. By invitation, twenty parents and grandparents and a dozen children walked from Woodstock Elementary School to Fire Station 25 on S.E. 52nd Avenue, just north of Holgate at Mall Street. The field trip was part of a monthly “Woodstock Walks” series organized by Catie Tam, head of the Neighborhood Accessibility Committee of the Woodstock Neighborhood Association. kAmpD E96 8C@FA 82E96C65 :?

They say that when community gets involved in a big project, miraculous things can happen. The Grand Opening and ribbon-cutting for the new, upgraded Woodstock Pantry – situated behind All Saints Episcopal Church on S.E. 41st Avenue, on the church’s property – was just such a project.

For years it was known as “First Cup Coffee”, in the small strip mall at the corner of S.E. 41st Avenue and Woodstock Boulevard. In 2021 the business was bought by Katherine Harris who remodeled the space and renamed the shop the Woodstock Café. Then last winter Harris sold the shop to the local nonprofit organization “CymaSpace”.
