At the May 13 meeting, the Nowthen City Council voted 5-0 to cancel its search for a new City Administrator after the interim Administrator, Natalie Johnson, brought to the Council’s attention that Nowthen didn’t have many things to be administered. Johnson said that, at one point during a conference she was at, she asked other similar cities with no services to stand up and introduce themselves so that she could speak with them.

At Huset Park on a sunny, crisp Memorial Day, the City of Columbia Heights held an event at the new Poland-partnered World War II memorial. The event featured an address from Mayor Amada Marquez Simula, as well as a presentation of colors by Boy Scout Troop 132. The St Francis City Council, at the May 5 meeting, voted 3-2 to deny an application for TIF funding for an apartment building that would have been constructed at 3731 Bridge St. NW. The move came after the EDA had already accepted a purchase agreement from North Shore Development for the building, at 120 units. Per the Planning Commission Agenda Report, North Shore had pitched a multifamily rental building at the six-acre parcel, along with an adjacent parcel to the north.

At the May 19 meeting, the Ham Lake City Council considered the first reading of its ordinance regulating the sale of cannabis in the city. City Attorney Mark Berglund said that the ordinance mirrored the ones that had been done by Andover and Anoka, along with a proposed fee schedule. There would be a $2,000 civil penalty for violating the ordinance per state statute.
