    Flags across South Dakota will be set to half-staff in honor of Pope Francis, who died Easter Monday at 88. South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden ordered flags to be lowered statewide "effective immediately as a mark of respect" for the pontiff, according to a April 22 press release from the Governor's Office. Flags will at half-staff until the day of Francis’ interment. A funeral is scheduled for 10 a.m. local time April 26 in St. Peter's Square.

    Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been nominated to receive an honorary doctorate from Dakota State University — over the objections of faculty and student senators. José-Marie Griffiths, president of the Madison school, sent DSU's Student Association Senate an open letter March 14 nominating Noem for the honorary degree, Anden Wieseler, vice president of the student senate, told the Argus Leader April 20.
