Missouri State University’s Faculty Senate met in a carry-over meeting and voted “no confidence” in President Richard “Biff” Williams on Thursday, Nov. 21. The Board of Governors also met on Wednesday, Nov. 20, for the third time since a federal lawsuit was filed against Williams on Nov. 7, and plans to meet again on Friday. The Faculty Senate carry-over meeting met at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

A water boil advisory was issued by City Utilities of Springfield early Saturday following a water main break in southeast Springfield at 2:30 a.m. in the area of Battlefield Road and U.S. Highway 65. According to CU, the affected area includes “from the intersection of Mt. Vernon St. and Campbell Street and follows Campbell Street to the south with all areas east of Campbell included the advisory.

The Springfield area ended a 31-day dry streak on Friday, Oct. 25 with some rain early in the morning. This marks the third longest dry streak ever recorded in Springfield. According to OzarksFirst, the second longest dry streak was recorded a little over a century ago in 1913, which consisted of 32 days. The longest streak on record was in 1902, with 33 days of drought. Before Friday, the last recorded rainfall occurred Sept. 23 with .89 inches and on Friday, .35 inches of rain was recorded.

A new gunshot detection technology may be implemented by the Springfield Police Department in areas throughout Springfield. The SPD is in the trial phase of the technology and the results are promising, but could cost the department anywhere from $20,000 to $250,000 according to Captain Culley Wilson.

On July 1, 2024, Dr. Richard “Biff” Williams became the 12th president of Missouri State University. Two months into his new role, President Williams already feels at home in Springfield and has been welcomed with open arms by the community, faculty, staff and students. “I feel like my wife and I really fit the community, we’re very comfortable here. The community is very warm and welcoming,” said Williams. Part of his new community is also fellow Springfield university presidents.

On Monday, Sept. 23, protesters gathered in front of the United States Courthouse on the corner of John Q. Hammons Parkway and E. St. Louis Street in Springfield, Missouri, objecting to the execution of Marcellus Williams, 55, scheduled for today. Attendees assembled at 5:30 p.m. displaying picket signs and chanting “What do we want? To stop the execution. When do we want it? Now.” at passers-by.
