    JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Johnson City Police Department (JCPD) shared progress on the “A Safer Drive in ’25” initiative on Thursday. The traffic safety initiative, which involves the JCPD and Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP), was launched in 2025 as a follow-up to last year’s “A Safer 26 in ’24.““Crashes are up this year, but we are grateful to report no lives have been lost on I-26 this year,” JCPD Police Chief Billy Church said in a news release.

    MARION, Va. (WJHL) — The Town of Marion announced Thursday that Kevin Testerman will serve as the new police chief. Courtesy of the Town of MarionTesterman, a Marion native, has been a police officer since 2001. In 2007, Testerman joined the Chilhowie Police Department, where he encountered a near-fatal shooting on his third day, the Town of Marion said in a news release. A few years later, Testerman returned to Marion.

    JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — East Tennessee State University (ETSU) said it’s actively monitoring government changes that could lead to the reduction of Pell Grants and TRiO programs. Joe Sherlin, Vice President for Student Life and Enrollment at ETSU, told News Channel 11 that Pell Grant changes will not be implemented until the 2026-2027 school year, if cuts to higher education funding are passed. “The programs that we have funding for are continuing in the next fiscal year,” Sherlin said.
