The UCP's annual general meeting is set to take place Nov. 1-2, in Red Deer, Alta., where party members will debate and vote on this and dozens of other policy and governance resolutions. The Alberta government wants the federal government to financially compensate the province for costs related to rebuilding Jasper after this summer's wildfire. Alberta's minister of public safety and emergency services, Mike Ellis, told a federal committee Monday that the provincial government had reduced decision-making power during the immediate aftermath of the Jasper wildfire, but still must foot the recovery bill.

Edmonton city council has voted to ban the sale of knives in convenience stores. A new convenience store business license category will be created, but implementing the changes can only happen when a business' license is up for renewal. Full implementation of the bylaw could take years. Convenience stores aren't breaking the law by stocking knives - the ones at issue aren't considered prohibited weapons under the Criminal Code.
