We’ll probably have more to say later, but for now, we’re still fighting these fires. There’s no prediction for when they’ll die out or how much damage will be done. All we know is that entire communities, namely Altadena and the Palisades, have been devastated. Thousands of homes and hundreds of businesses have been lost. We’re heartbroken, and we’re anxious. We love Los Angeles so much.

More than anything else, the reason I put Tsubaki on a pedestal is because the food is consistently spectacular, and so is the sake list. I have never had a bad meal there—not even a subpar dish. In a town full of good salads, Tsubaki’s Japanese Caesar, with frilly lettuces tossed in panko and creamy miso dressing, topped with a snowdrift of shredded bonito and nori, is my favorite. Quarter Sheets stands out from other pizza parlors in several ways, most obviously due to its “very serious dessert program,” as Lindell puts it.
