ANKENY, Iowa — The suspect in the recent shootings of two Minnesota lawmakers took courses at Des Moines Area Community College, a spokesperson told Local 5. 57-year-old Vance Boelter was arrested Sunday in connection to the shooting deaths of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark. Boelter is also accused of shooting Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.

POLK COUNTY, Iowa — One of the Minnesota legislators who was shot Saturday morning has strong ties to Iowa, according to the Minnesota Legislative Library. From 1991 to 1997, Minnesota State Sen. John Hoffman worked for the Department of Youth Services in Polk County as a supervisor of a juvenile detention center. In addition, Hoffman served as a technical assistant and program manager for the Iowa Department of Human Services from 1997 to 2001.
