WOI-TV (Des Moines, IA)
Local 5 WOI-DT, channel 5, is the ABC affiliate serving the Des Moines area. The station shares its studio space with KCWI-TV, a CW affiliate located on channel 23, both of which are situated on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Local 5 began broadcasting on February 21, 1950, making it Iowa’s second television station and the first to operate in Des Moines. Originally, it was owned by Iowa State University in Ames, along with its noncommercial WOI radio stations, making it the first major college-owned commercial TV station in the U.S. On March 1, 1994, WOI-TV changed ownership and relocated its studios to a temporary site in Des Moines later that year. In 1998, the station settled into its current location on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa.
