Local 5 WOI-DT, channel 5, is the ABC affiliate serving the Des Moines area. The station shares its studio space with KCWI-TV, a CW affiliate located on channel 23, both of which are situated on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines. Local 5 began broadcasting on February 21, 1950, making it Iowa’s second television station and the first to operate in Des Moines. Originally, it was owned by Iowa State University in Ames, along with its noncommercial WOI radio stations, making it the first major college-owned commercial TV station in the U.S. On March 1, 1994, WOI-TV changed ownership and relocated its studios to a temporary site in Des Moines later that year. In 1998, the station settled into its current location on Westown Parkway in West Des Moines, Iowa.

    DES MOINES, Iowa — The city of Des Moines is ending it's participation in a national initiative to bring more women into the Des Moines Police Department. The 30x30 initiative is lead by a coalition of police leaders whose goal is to ensure women make up 30 percent of police officers by 2030. Only 11% of the total sworn-in Des Moines police officers are women. The department joined the 30x30 program in 2021 to help grow that percentage.
