If I’m going to have to wend my way down a single-track lane, and risk having to attempt reversing manoeuvres (one of my least favourite things!) then the destination had better be worth it. On this occasion, we’re heading to The Swan Inn at Rowberrow, and when we arrive and find the car park almost full to bursting at 12pm all the signs are looking good.

Fish and chips. There may be no other dish quite as dear to the heart of a Brit; no other dish so deeply imbued with a sense of nostalgia. Whether it’s childhood holidays sitting by the seaside, picking hot, crispy morsels from the folds of newspapers, while sheltering from that typically biting coastal breeze that seems to prevail even in summer, or simply queuing in the local chippy on a Friday night, just about everyone seems to have some sort of memory of a chippy tea.
