Somerset MPs have expressed their disappointment after the government declined to fund urgent repairs at one of the county's main hospitals. Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton was part of the Conservatives' new hospitals programme, which pledged to deliver "40 new hospitals" by 2030. A review carried out after the general election concluded that many of these new or rebuilt hospitals were "behind schedule, unfunded and therefore undeliverable" - forcing many of the projects to be postponed.

Bridgwater residents have lambasted "backwards" plans for a major new development near the M5, claiming it will lead to more traffic and increased pressure on local services. Edward Ware (Bridgwater) Ltd. put forward plans in October 2023 for a major development between Bower Lane and the M5, comprising up to 750 houses, a primary school and a community facility.

Two farmers from Orcheston, near Salisbury, have been sentenced for animal welfare offences and for breaching a court disqualification order after cattle were found living in squalid conditions at their farm. Michael Babey, 69, received a 20-week prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Salisbury Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, April 24. He was also ordered to pay £5,000 in costs and a £154 victim surcharge.

A 30-strong delegation from the South West has delivered a direct appeal to Parliament, urging the government to commit funding for new railway stations in Wellington and Cullompton. The delegation, organised by Gideon Amos MP, met with Rail Minister Lord Hendy on the steps of Westminster Hall on Wednesday. They were joined by Richard Foord MP, whose Honiton and Sidmouth constituency includes Cullompton.
