Bookstores carry an abundance of bloated and bloviating drinks manuals. Once upon a time, such guides were satisfied to keep things simple. For example, in 1949 Esquire magazine published a “Handbook for Hosts” that offered unfussy recipes such as the Dubonnet cocktail, made of equal parts gin and Dubonnet.

    Nate Silver has a particular penchant for games of skill and chance. Best known for accurately predicting the outcome of the 2012 presidential election with the poll-analysis shop he founded, FiveThirtyEight (since rebranded 538 by its current owners, ABC News), Mr. Silver now writes Silver Bulletin, a publication on Substack, and has produced a book exploring how a tolerance for risk, informed by probabilistic thinking, can determine who wins—whether at business, politics or gambling.

    After the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, the Secret Service’s top spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, spent a week denying something he knew or should have known was true—that the Secret Service had given the cold shoulder to the Trump campaign’s requests for more protection. “There’s an untrue assertion that a member of the former President’s team requested additional security resources & that those were rebuffed,” Mr. Guglielmi asserted on Twitter July 14, the day after the shooting.
