    A Morganton brewery claimed Best of Show honors at the 2025 Hickory Hops and Carolinas Championship of Beers on April 12. Sidetracked Brewing master brewer Joseph Ackerman was awarded a first-place plaque for Butterfly Riot, a Belgian blonde ale, according to a news release from the Hickory Downtown Development Association. The brewery is no stranger to awards at the Carolinas Championship of Beers.

    Pro golfer J.T. Poston was two strokes over par after the first round of The Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia on Thursday. Poston, who was born and raised in Hickory, was tied with several notable golfers after the first round, including Will Zalatoris and Tony Finau. The 31-year-old Poston has three wins on the PGA tour. A victory in Augusta would be lucrative for Poston. The winner of The Masters will take home more than $3 million.

    A Claremont woman was sentenced to at least six years in prison following her guilty plea on April 3 in Catawba County Superior Court. Jacquelyn Michelle Moss, 39, was sentenced by Judge Karen Eady Williams to serve six to eight years in prison after pleading guilty to trafficking opium/heroin by possession and possession of methamphetamine, according to a news release from District Attorney Scott Reilly’s office. Moss also faces a $500,000 fine for the trafficking conviction, the release said.
