Richland voters later this year will have the chance to elect a father-son duo to the city council. Filing week for elections this year closed 5 p.m. Friday. More than 130 candidates in both Benton and Franklin counties filed paperwork to run in nearly 90 local, nonpartisan races. On Monday, council incumbent Kurt Maier filed for a second term. Then, late Thursday, his 18-year-old son John registered for another seat on the council, one that’s being vacated by Ryan Lukson, a former mayor.

Kennewick, WAThe first Latina council member ever elected to serve as Pasco mayor says she will not seek reelection this year. Blanche Barajas confirmed to the Tri-City Herald on Thursday her plans to step away from the city council after serving two four-year terms. She’s instead recommending a former Pasco High School teacher and Latino voter organizer, Mark Figueroa, to seek her seat.

Kennewick, WALyla Parker, a Kamiakin High School senior, has been named a National Merit Corporation scholarship recipient. She and 2,500 others were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. That means she’ll take home $2,500 to use for college and university schooling. She plans to study chemical engineering. These awards are separate from the corporate-sponsored scholarships announced last month.
