Sometimes, they’re frighteningly ugly, the things nightmares are made from. Sometimes, they’re angelic or they pay homage to others. And sometimes, “grotesque” can be the most appropriate word for them. Yet a hundred years ago, longer in some cases, the artisans who spent countless days and weeks crafting and chiseling limestone or granite must have seen the absolute beauty in what they were creating, and believed it would last a lifetime. What’s this about? All you need to do is stop and look up.

Birders, using binoculars or their own cameras, focus on the tree line at Plum Creek full of juvenile and mature eagles in the area to feed on fish in the warm waters during a once-yearly bald eagle tour. DTE Energy hosted the event along with the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge on the grounds of its DTE Energy Monroe Power Plant in Monroe on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. The warm water discharge at the power plant keeps the water from freezing, unlike Lake Erie.

The saying “money doesn’t grow on trees” is true, but don’t tell that to recent lottery winners dressed for the cold weather of January in Michigan. For them, just looking up to the skies or the nearby tree lines was their payoff, with between 80 and 150 eagles on the grounds of the DTE Energy power plant in Monroe on a recent Saturday.

Color me shocked but happy! We went to a #Detroit @tigers game on Mothers Day, they lost. Just got an email offering discounted tickets to an upcoming game, “we owe you a win.” Never seen that kind of thing before it’s pretty cool & good marketing. ⚾️ @MLB #detroittigers https://t.co/qX5e9pLwSb
