Retired construction manager Romeo Croatto went to cast his early ballot shortly after polls opened at 9 a.m. Friday — catching what appears to be a nationwide wave of early voting. Croatto, 83, was among the many voters who turned out early on Good Friday to Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre in the St. Boniface—St. Vital riding to cast advanced ballots. WINNIPEG — A Manitoba chief appeared in a Saskatchewan court Tuesday on sexual assault charges in relation to incidents that allegedly occurred at a hotel last year. Donald Smoke, 53, of Portage la Prairie was charged with two counts of sexual assault in February, by RCMP in Kindersley, Sask., a town about 200 kilometres of southwest of Saskatoon. Smoke is hereditary chief of Dakota Plains, a First Nation of just about 300 people southwest of Portage la Prairie.

WINNIPEG — The consumer carbon tax is gone, but Ottawa continues to charge big industrial polluters, to Manitoba’s benefit. The province is receiving $26.4 million over the next five years from the federal output-based pricing system that applies in Manitoba, and returns carbon-pollution proceeds to their jurisdiction of origin. In March, Manitoba signed a bilateral agreement to receive a portion of funds collected by the Canadian government from large industrial emitters in the province.

Nearly 50 per cent of drivers screened for drugs during a three-month enforcement campaign tested positive for cannabis, sparking concerns ‘don’t drive high’ is a message not getting through to Winnipeggers. The campaign, run by the Winnipeg Police Service’s traffic division, with funding from the provincial government and help from Manitoba Public Insurance, targeted pot-impaired drivers from January through March.
