The 2027 Summer Games are expected to take place at multiple venues in Charlotte and across the Carolinas. One of the leaders of Charlotte’s successful bid to host the 2027 CISM World Military Summer Games said Thursday that staging the event will likely cost $80 million — expenses expected to be covered by a combination of sponsorships, ticket sales, private contributions and, potentially, state government incentives.

The games will bring 10,000 military athletes to the region in 2027. Charlotte has been selected to host the CISM Military World Summer Games in 2027. The event features 10,000 military members from 100 countries and takes place every four years, preceding the Summer Olympics by one year. Brussels-based International Military Sports Council selected Charlotte for the event from a bid led by Charlotte-based United States Performance Center.

The city and CATS are developing plans for what comes next at Charlotte Transportation Center site after development deal falters. In 2019, the city of Charlotte and Charlotte Area Transit System signed an agreement with two developers that would include the replacement of the Charlotte Transportation Center. Six years later, they’re back at the beginning. The need to replace the main connection point for the city's bus system in the heart of uptown remains.

The public-private partnership agreed to in 2019 for a major redevelopment of the site has expired, the city claims. An option held by two real estate firms to redevelop the Charlotte Transportation Center is in dispute even as the project envisioned for the site has been scrapped.

The first 12 months of legalized online sports betting in the state concluded in February. The Charlotte 49ers received $1.9 million from online sports betting during the first full year of legalized gambling in the state, according to the school’s athletic department. Charlotte and athletic departments at 12 other UNC system schools each receive an annual allocation of $300,000, per the state law approving online sports betting passed in June 2023.
