The family of a Montreal man who died during a police intervention is demanding a public coroner’s inquest into the death. Police were called while Abisay Cruz was in crisis in the Saint-Michel neighbourhood on March 30 when officers turned violent and used excessive force on the 29-year-old, his family said. Quebec’s independent police watchdog (BEI) is investigating the death, but Cruz’s family and the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR) said there is little trust.

Quebec is poised to adopt a bill aimed to stem the exodus of doctors to the private sector, but a Montreal clinic says the approach is all wrong. Health Minister Christian Dubé’s Bill 83 requires all new doctors to work in Quebec’s public network for at least five years before being allowed to practice in the private sector.

A Montreal lawyer is criticizing Quebec’s housing minister and the rental board, saying the new formula to determine rent increases is still flawed. After Quebec’s housing tribunal (TAL) recommended an average 5.9 per cent increase this year – the highest in three decades – both landlords and tenants called for the system to be adjusted. Quebec announced its new calculation method last week, saying that under the new formula, the average increase would have been 4.5 per cent instead.

One senior is dead and another is in the hospital after being hit by a car in the parking lot of a mall in Montreal’s Saint-Laurent borough. Montreal police (SPVM) were called at 3:15 p.m. about a collision between a vehicle and two pedestrians at the Place Vertu shopping centre on Côte-Vertu Boulevard. A 97-year-old woman and an 89-year-old man were taken to the hospital in critical condition. The man succumbed to his injuries. The woman’s life is now out of danger.

A man in his 50s died after being hit by a vehicle on Montreal’s South Shore Monday morning. Châteauguay police said they received a call around 6:35 a.m. about a collision at the intersection of Anjou Boulevard and Bell Street. According to preliminary information, the driver was going down Anjou Boulevard when he deviated from his lane, crashed into two streetlamps, and hit a pedestrian. The pedestrian was taken to hospital where he was declared dead.
