This Monday, February 17, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, a reminder to perform small yet impactful gestures for others. It is also our wedding anniversary, a moment to reflect on the incredible partnership that marriage brings. My wife Tami and I work together to pursue our shared dreams and overcome life’s hurdles. When a board of conservative trustees installed by Gov. Ron DeSantis essentially took over New College in 2023, it seemed instantly clear nothing would be the same. The latest budget from DeSantis could signal a complete underestimation of the most grandiose or apocalyptic of expectations.
The Governor’s budget calls for The Ringling to become part of the adjacent New College. Admittedly, this could be a largely administrative shift.

If you’re flying out of SRQ, you may be lucky enough to do so in coastal style. Last month, our Visit Sarasota County team was overjoyed to join our community at the opening of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport’s new terminal. There, moments after the ribbon was cut, attendees walked out on the tarmac to view sea turtles and manatees – but not in the way you’d expect.

State Rep. James Buchanan, R-Sarasota, just threw down the gauntlet on maybe the most important local race of the 2026 election cycle in the region. The four-term House member filed to succeed state Sen. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, in Senate District 22.
This could become the hottest race around. Or it could be a sleeper. The first big test will be if Buchanan’s name and clout with voters keeps other serious contenders from throwing their hats in the ring.

As New College moves into the new year, our students are already hard at work in one of the signature aspects of our unique academic program. The month of January is our Independent Study Project (ISP) term, meaning students are wholly devoted to one thorough academic endeavor.
Every student at New College, whether they attend for all four years or transfer in from another institution, must complete three ISPs before graduating. ISPs come in a variety of forms.

Election results Tuesday firmly proved Republicans hold dominance of Sarasota area politics. But they also showed Republicans here won’t be commandeered completely by extremists in their ranks.
The former point seemed proven in brutal fashion by the ouster of long-time Tax Collector Barbara Ford-Coates.
