We live in a wonderful place. The evidence is how many people have moved here from other places and how traffic has increased in the area. It’s one of the biggest complaints here, and when traffic is one of our biggest problems and not crime, or economic deterioration, or education, like you see in the cities where people are fleeing from, it really highlights how lucky we are, and it also means people will be passionate about our community.

This Monday, February 17, we celebrate Random Acts of Kindness Day, a reminder to perform small yet impactful gestures for others. It is also our wedding anniversary, a moment to reflect on the incredible partnership that marriage brings. My wife Tami and I work together to pursue our shared dreams and overcome life’s hurdles. I am profoundly grateful for Tami and her remarkable gift of kindness.

I recently had the opportunity to go on a benchmarking trip to Charleston organized by the Sarasota Chamber. These trips are organized to learn both best practices and what to avoid in public policy and processes. It is good to get out of the community and learn about the challenges and successes of other areas and how they are dealing with them.
It was during this trip, that I discovered there was a recent sales tax vote in Charleston County this past November.

State Rep. James Buchanan, R-Sarasota, just threw down the gauntlet on maybe the most important local race of the 2026 election cycle in the region. The four-term House member filed to succeed state Sen. Joe Gruters, R-Sarasota, in Senate District 22.
This could become the hottest race around. Or it could be a sleeper. The first big test will be if Buchanan’s name and clout with voters keeps other serious contenders from throwing their hats in the ring.

As New College moves into the new year, our students are already hard at work in one of the signature aspects of our unique academic program. The month of January is our Independent Study Project (ISP) term, meaning students are wholly devoted to one thorough academic endeavor.
Every student at New College, whether they attend for all four years or transfer in from another institution, must complete three ISPs before graduating. ISPs come in a variety of forms.
