The Oakland Roots soccer team sold out its home opener at the Coliseum last weekend. From our California Newsroom member station, KALW, Erin Lim has more. More than 26 thousand fans filled the seats to cheer on the team who was up against the San Antonio FC. In previous seasons the Oakland Roots played at Laney College and Cal State East Bay but those stadiums only sold around 5,000 seats per game. This game is the highest attended for any team in this soccer league.

On March 17, 2020, San Francisco was brought to a halt by the Covid-19 virus. Former Mayor London Breed mandated that residents of San Francisco stay home and only go out for essential needs. A lot of focus about the pandemic’s effect on San Francisco has been about downtown, but how did other neighborhoods deal with the shut down? KALW asked residents and workers in the Mission district about their memories and experiences when the shut down was announced.

The NBA All Star weekend will include three days of games, concerts, and other fan experiences that will coincide with the 174th Chinese New Year Parade. Together, they will take over downtown and places around Chase Center in the Mission Bay neighborhood. According to SFMTA, anticipated street closures will begin as early as Thursday morning through Monday around Chase Center , Moscone Center, and Pier 48.

As firefighters work to contain multiple fires in Los Angeles, up here in the Bay Area there’s no rain in sight and winds are picking up. Temperatures will continue to be in the high 50s to mid 60s with sunny skies for the next 10 days, according to The National Weather Service. A high wind advisory is in effect for the North Bay through Tuesday morning. Rainfall in some Bay Area regions is slightly above normal.
