by Juli CarielloStaffwriterFrom April 3–5, on-campus organizations came together for Booth, a Carnival tradition in which students construct small buildings decorated to fit a theme. Organizations built 18 booths (not including doghouses) on Midway, the parking lot between Margaret Morrison and the College of Fine Arts, which were each designed based on a movie or TV show to fit the Hollywood theme chosen by the Spring Carnival Council.

On April 12 in the McConomy Auditorium, a debate was held between the Carnegie Mellon College Republicans and College Democrats. The event was moderated by the Undergraduate Student Senate and Carnegie Debate, with questions created by the latter student organization. The debate was also livestreamed and posted to the cmuTV YouTube channel. The Tartan spoke to members of each student organization to learn about the motivation behind the event and its importance in the Carnegie Mellon community.

The Undergraduate Student Senate held its last general body meeting before spring break on Feb. 27 to discuss poster management on Student Government bulletin boards, a Title IX initiative, and committee updates. The meeting began by addressing the question of what is to be done about the overflow of posters on Student Government bulletin boards. An initial attempt at resolving this issue involved the poster arbiter (PPA) performing checks on the bulletin boards weekly instead of biweekly.

Way back in 1972, a little ol’ boy from Chicago, Illinois, Bobby Fischer, took on the Soviet Chess apparatus and won. It started the American chess boom and completely changed the way that the entire game was looked at by people across a country that had, until now, not cared a damn about chess. Chess, people claimed, was going to be a great American sport now.

With every rotation ’round the sun, hockey fans keep their eyes out for those beautiful annual experiences: the Stanley Cup Playoffs, outdoor games, and of course, which players end up where as general managers decide either to bolster their teams or admit that their plans were dumpster fires.

On Thursday March 13th, the Undergraduate Senate General Body Meeting took place. Senators discussed upcoming events such as the SPIRIT fashion show, as well as advocacy updates and meetings with Pittsburgh politicians. 22 senators and proxies were in attendance, barely passing the minimum attendance requirement to hold the meeting. Spirit Fashion ShowThe first order of business was a vote on providing additional funding for the upcoming SPIRIT fashion show.

I think we all need to tell people stories. I talk a lot about stories here, and I don’t intend on stopping anytime soon. There’s so much to talk about. I can write and write and write and not tell a fraction of the stories I want to because there are just so many. And how on earth do I even tell them? To most, that has an easy answer. I should just write it out and ask you to read my stories. But what if you can’t? Or what if I’m bad at it? Or what if, get this, you just don’t get words right?

The grocery store stocks hundreds of items, selling at what students describe as affordable prices. Serving fresh, serving local, and serving the community, Scotty’s is a campus food revolution. “This has to be by far one of the best dining locations on campus,” said sophomore Zoe Botta on opening day, Aug. 23.

By Arden RyanOn Sept. 12, Democratic candidate Lindsay Powell won a decisive victory in a special election to represent District 21 in the Pennsylvania House. With the win, Democrats regained a narrow majority and agenda-setting power as the state government reconvenes in Harrisburg on Sept. 26. “I’ve been a lifelong public servant,” Powell said. “I’ve always been very passionate about government and politics, and I’m very excited for the opportunity to serve my community in this way.
