Finesse and purity take precedence over power, intensity, and structure in the wines of the 2004 Champagne vintage, says Essi Avellan MW, after a tasting shared with Simon Field MW and Joanna Simon. If you browse through wine websites, you’ll see that the 2004 Champagne vintage does not rank very highly on most vintage charts. Nor does it fare particularly well on secondary markets, with much more interest always being given to the instantly impressive 2002 harvest year.

I find that appreciation for rosé Champagne still lags behind that of white Champagne. Yes, I can understand curling one’s lip at some of the more simple non-vintage rosés, where the lure is solely in the pink colour and straight-forward berry flavours. The festive season is the perfect occasion to treat yourself and your loved ones to unforgettable Champagne moments. But with so much variety on the market, where should you begin? Fresh and vibrant non-vintage Champagnes make for perfect all-rounders for any social gathering or Christmas party, and I came across plenty of great examples when tasting for The Grande Marque Champagne Report 2024. Aged to toasty delightfulness, Taittinger’s Prélude Grands Crus NV is bound to please all palates.

The term ‘non-vintage’ is familiar to many a Champagne fan but we are increasingly seeing the word ‘multi-vintage’ enter the champenois’ marketing vocabulary. Lately, we have witnessed an increasing use of the multi-vintage term for non-vintage cuvées carrying edition numbering on the bottle. The message, it seems, is that in essence, multi-vintage is a more premium offering than non-vintage. And yet, the difference between the two remains a mystery to many, consumers and trade alike.
