Most people, at some point in their lives, will consider the idea of living in the countryside. The idyllic image of the quaint little cottage, with a pastel coloured front door, wild garden and a thatched roof, will usually enter the minds of those looking to ‘settle down’. Thoughts of beautiful strolls through forests and along rivers, and the sense of community that comes with living in a small village prevail.

YES, Sam LewisPeople don’t want to strike: if you strike then you can’t be paid. This is important to consider with the marking boycott, as strikers face the potential of a 50 percent pay cut when striking. I bring this up to show how desperate the situation must be for the UCU to take such a step – a step so drastic that the reason for the boycott, and therefore why it should be supported and taken incredibly seriously. Quite simply, strikes are no longer working.

In October 2020, on the heels of his momentous decision to come out as gay, Phillip Schofield’s autobiography, Life’s What You Make It, was released. I recall it occupying a place on my Notes app’s disorganised ‘To Be Read’ list. Predictably, my degree thwarted these ambitions, ensuring I devoted more time to Messrs Sophocles and Shakespeare than Schofield. I was always a fan of Phillip Schofield. I saw him as a professional and personable face.

With the recently issued warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) calling for the arrest of Putin and other Russian politicians, the world has been wondering whether this move by the ICC will culminate in more than just a symbolic gesture of support for the Ukrainian resistance. On one side, international organisations like the United Nations (UN) and the ICC claim to be effective in their efforts of peacekeeping and prosecuting international criminals.

Environmental activist group Just Stop Oil has gained significant publicity with recent appearances at the World Snooker Championships, the Chelsea Flower Show, and as I type this, the Rugby Union Premiership final. Their unusual tactics, often involving lashings of orange paint, tend to grab headlines. The group’s strategy of maximising disruption to increase exposure appears to follow the old adage of any publicity being good publicity, and through this lens, they are achieving their objective.

As this academic year draws to a close, and my tenure as a Comment Editor with it, I have been reflecting on why I think the esteemed Comment section of Nouse is so essential (a shocking position for a Comment Editor...). My reflections began after watching a particularly heated debate end with the seemingly innocuous phrase “well that’s just your opinion”.

The Los Angeles Dodgers Baseball club made headlines in May for extending, then rescinding, and finally re-extending, an invitation to the drag comedy group Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence. The Sisters, who began in the 1980s holding fundraisers for AIDS organisations, dress as satirical nuns for “the expiation of stigmatic guilt and the promulgation of universal joyâ€. The Dodgers were accused of becoming an “anti-Catholichate groupâ€, laying bare the American Rights persecution complex.

York and Lancaster appeared well matched across the five opening boat races. York won three out of five races, but finished tied at four points apiece as Lancaster took the pivotal Senior Men’s 1st VIII at the final gun. The Roses titans began the day both hoping to build on recent successes, with Lancaster winning on points at Roses last year, but some recent wins motivating York.

January can be a difficult month. It’s dark, exam season for many, and seems to exist in a perpetual hangover after the holiday period. But February brings with it longer days (sunlight past 5pm!), the emergent heads of snowdrops across campus, and most importantly, both a print and online edition of Nouse. Hope springs eternal. New years and new seasons present opportunities for reflection. In this case, I find myself considering the role of the media in our lives.
