COLUMBIA — Columbia mayoral candidates Tanya Heath, Barbara Buffaloe and Blair Murphy discussed public safety, the city budget, panhandling, public education and more Monday evening in a mayoral debate hosted by KOMU 8. The debate, hosted in partnership with the Columbia Chamber of Commerce and Reynolds Journalism Institute, brought the three candidates to the University of Missouri campus to the RJI studio. The first section of the debate aired on KOMU 8, and the second half streamed online.

Jefferson City police were involved in a shooting that killed one person Friday. The incident occurred during a burglary incident just before 4 p.m. at the 200 block of Gordon Street. While responding to the call, police said in a news release officers encountered an armed suspect in the residence. In the course of the response, a shooting occurred and the suspect was killed.
