Built in 1909, the Johnson Public Library is a Carnegie-style brick building that sat between Railroad Street and the Gihon River. Johnson is a former mill town where two rivers meet. Over the years, countless floods have devastated the library and town, most notably in 1927, 1996 and 2023. The library lost 1,500 books in the recent flood and has been operating out of the basement of the nearby Masonic Temple.

Seven Days freelance photographer Daria Bishop started buying PEZ candy dispensers 20 years ago as holiday gifts for her young children. She loved the bunny rabbits at Easter and the Santa figures at Christmas. For Bishop, 57, it was less about the candy and more about the zany characters. As her kids grew, so did her PEZ collection — she now has about 600. PEZ is short for pfefferminz, German for "peppermint." The candy brand was founded in Austria in 1927.

For more than 100 years, the Haskell Free Library & Opera House has been a symbol of friendship and unity between the U.S. and Canada. Opened in the early 1900s, the building straddles Derby Line, Vt., and Stanstead, Québec. A strip of thick black tape runs diagonally through the building to delineate the border. But as tensions escalate between the two countries, the library has become caught in the crosshairs. Most of the library is in Canada, but the entrance is in America.
