Fernando Carreno doesn’t have the most glamorous job. Much of his time is spent navigating through tight spaces underneath bridges. But make no mistake – the work he does is critical. Carreno is a senior bridge inspector with the Florida Department of Transportation. He’s been doing this type of work for nearly 20 years. Ultimately, his job is done with you in mind – the people who drive over bridges every day. “They need to know that they're safe,” Carreno said.

The problem? “I think most Americans still don't understand how a tariff works,” Victor Claar, an economics professor with Florida Gulf Coast University, told Gulf Coast News. “A tariff is a tax paid by American companies when they want to bring in a good that’s been produced in another country,” he explained.

In Fort Myers, the stretch of Hanson Street just west of I-75 is insignificant. At least, to most people. “No one really knows what took place or what happened here,” Richard Harasym told Gulf Coast News. But Harasym, a cold case detective with the Fort Myers Police Department, does know – or at least has been working to find out. Because before the street stretched east, something did happen in the area. Something sinister. “Where the street is, was all wooded area,” Harasym said.

A man who sued the Lee County Sheriff and a now-fired sergeant is getting a large sum of money as part of a settlement. Cory Samek is receiving $400,000 as part of the agreement, according to documents obtained by Gulf Coast News. The incident that sparked it happened back in August of 2023 outside of a gas station on Palm Beach Boulevard. Lee County sheriff’s deputies came across Samek, who they said was drinking and causing problems.
