While patrol rifles undoubtedly have their place, the shotgun, when properly configured, is still a viable and effective tool. Does it replace a patrol rifle? Not necessarily. Does having a patrol rifle mean you shouldn’t also carry a shotgun? We will dig into that. What are the pros and cons of a shotgun versus a patrol rifle? Shotguns can be more difficult to keep fed.

(No Ratings Yet)Loading... When Trijicon released the RCR—Ruggedized Close Reflex—in ’23, there was much discussion of the optic’s form, especially of the mounting system. The RCR is an enclosed emitter optic, like the Aimpoint Acro, Steiner MPS, and others. Most of the optics on long guns – carbines, shotguns, and sub-guns – are tubular, like a traditional scope. That has not been the case with the miniature backup optics that developed into the common pistol-mounted optics of today.

They asked for articles discussing close-range and point shooting. This led to a discussion of retention position shooting after a recent class. During this same time frame, I taught at the Pat Rogers Memorial Revolver Round-Up, a three-day revolver-centric event held at Gunsite. One of the other instructors was Cecil Burch.

Square range training is already limiting, but agencies limited it further by only moving in one general direction, backward. When confronted with deadly force, the prevailing mindset was to “move to cover” or “run to cover.” In most cases, that movement was to the rear. The problem is, without regard to how “safe” and or easy it can be to facilitate, it’s just not real.

However, we must ask if these standards adequately prepare officers to succeed in deadly force encounters. A qualification course is scripted with many knowns, while a deadly force encounter is an unscripted affair with many unknowns. Passing a qualification course does not ensure success in a gunfight. Qualifications have a set number of rounds with known time standards.

The hostage negotiator community has documented instances of their equipment not “hearing” a gunshot. Body-worn Cameras may not be physically oriented to catch the shot’s firing. What if the “witness” to an officer-involved shooting gave an intentionally false statement?
