While patrol rifles undoubtedly have their place, the shotgun, when properly configured, is still a viable and effective tool. Does it replace a patrol rifle? Not necessarily. Does having a patrol rifle mean you shouldn’t also carry a shotgun? We will dig into that. What are the pros and cons of a shotgun versus a patrol rifle? Shotguns can be more difficult to keep fed.

During my two careers, I managed to at least encounter, if not wear, most of the “tactical” clothing styles we have had for a while. That includes several flavors of utilities from the Army – BDUs – heavy and lightweight woodland, OG107 jungle fatigues, six and three-color desert camo, and that ACU/Universal pattern.

While some agencies had them long before that, I didn’t see them become as popular or prevalent in New England until the early 2000s. When I was first assigned to the Firearms Training Unit at my previous agency, we had about 175 patrol rifles. Currently, they have about 900 in the field. They started to gain more ground following the North Hollywood shootout and haven’t slowed down since.

No use of force looks good on camera or when viewed with the 20-20 vision of hindsight. Second guessing after the fact occurs almost every time. Often based on short, grainy, low-quality snippets of video. The poor-quality videos, which often lack context, have swayed public opinion on police use of force. This colors the legitimacy, necessity, reasonableness, and validity of the force used by officers in recent years.

Today, patrol rifles are common in patrol cars. They are routinely issued to patrol, and often, most officers in an agency have a rifle. This was not the case in the 1980s. Back then, most police officers only had a revolver with a total of 18 rounds and, possibly, a shotgun holding only 4 rounds of buckshot. “The Police” are terrible at passing information down to the next generation of officers.
