In my junior year of high school, I made a far-too-long list of books I wanted to read before graduating. About 90% of the books on that list were classic novels written in the 19th century. I figured that reading as many books as I possibly could from authors like Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Charles Dickens and Leo Tolstoy would be well worth my time because it would mean I’d read a lot of “impressive” books.

Last week was Banned Books Week, an annual event that began in 1982 to call attention to the dangers of literary censorship. Each year, the American Library Association compiles and publishes data on book bans and censorship demands in the U.S. — and it’s sometimes surprising and always disappointing when I learn that some of my favorite books are being removed from library shelves. The ALA reported that in 2023, the number of individual book titles challenged increased by 65% compared to 2022.

Faculty Assembly President Robin Kear gave an update on the ongoing issue with the Disability and Resource Services’ Testing Center capacity at this week’s meeting. For 18 months, the testing center has frequently reached capacity, especially during midterms and finals weeks. DRS reportedly sent an email to teaching faculty this week outlining the testing center’s purpose and suggested methods to fix the issue with capacity.

The “A Court of Thorns and Roses” series easily includes the best books I have ever read. This series creates a world filled with fantasy, romance, fantastic world building, characters you can hate and love and a whirlwind of emotions throughout the entire journey. “A Court of Thorns and Roses” — known as ACOTAR — is a five-book series written by Sarah J. Maas. I read the first book during the pandemic and I have thought about it every day since. Anytime I read fantasy, I compare it to ACOTAR.

For Benjamin Leighow, president of the club Music and Entertainment Business, it is important for students interested in the music business to have a community as early on in their careers as possible. While neighboring schools like Point Park University have a diverse list of courses for music business, Leighow said there are significantly less opportunities for students at Pitt.
