At its weekly meeting on Tuesday at Nordy’s Place, Student Government Board announced a new Workers United ad-hoc and changes to the allocation request process for student organizations. The board also voted to pass the single-use plastics resolution. Board member Neal Gupta announced the charter for the Workers United ad-hoc committee, which will provide a space for on-campus student workers to address their concerns. The board will vote on the ad-hoc at the next public meeting.

SGB candidates debated key policy initiatives, including the future relationship between the board and University administration during the presidential debate on Tuesday night at Nordy’s Place. Undergraduate students will be able to cast their votes in two weeks on March 11th. Four presidential candidates are running on two distinct campaigns– the Forward ticket and the H2Pinsky-Budike ticket.

To prepare for the upcoming election, the Student Government Board held a “Meet the Candidates” event on Tuesday night at Nordy’s Place. Moderated by WPTS staff members Maxine Van Nortwick and Perry J Bowser, the event allowed thirteen candidates for President, Vice President, and SGB Board to answer questions about their campaigns and share their top initiatives. SGB elections will take place on March 11 and are open to the student body.

In recent Student Government Board meetings, board members have expressed concerns about increased allocations spending and whether the $900,000 budget will last the whole school year. Data compiled by The Pitt News shows while SGB is granting allocations at an unprecedented rate, the denial rate is the highest since its budget increased in 2019. As of Feb. 5, the board has allocated $499,312.09 across 74 requests.
