Short-read sequencing samples through the Illumina MiSeq pipeline generated 6,189,306 sequencing reads after denoising, removing chimeras and filtering low-quality sequences. Reads were processed, yielding a total of 2,165 reads for taxonomic assignment. Finally, 221 taxa collapsed at genus level after processing the raw data. A total of 183 taxa were present among samples with a frequency greater than ten and a prevalence of 20% at the genus level.

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies, or prion diseases are fatal neurodegenerative disorders produced by the accumulation of a neurotoxic misfolded isoform (PrPSc) of the cellular prion protein (PrPC). This conformational change provides PrPSc with partial resistance to proteases and a tendency to form aggregates, characteristics that have been extensively used for the diagnosis of these disorders.

Initially, 40 lamb ewes from a single flock in the northwest region of Castilla y León (Spain) that were transported to the facilities of the IGM in León were fed ad libitum with a standard diet for replacement ewe lambs providing 16% crude protein until three months of age and were subsequently divided into two groups. The two experimental groups were composed of 20 NPR and 20 C animals.
