    ACADIA NAT'L PARK — A 75-year-old man driving a rented U-Haul truck broke through the ice on Echo Lake in Mount Desert early this morning. The man was rescued by local emergency responders and taken to MDI Hospital where he was treated and released. The call came into around 4:45 a.m. and the Mount Desert Fire Department, along with assistance from the Southwest Harbor Fire Department and Maine Warden Service, responded.

    BAR HARBOR — Gary Friedmann is set to resign from the Town Council at its next regular meeting on Tuesday. The Jan. 21 meeting will be his last as a member of the seven-person board that he has served on for the last 10 years. Friedmann, who was reelected to the Council in a six-way race for two open seats in June, was also elected to the state Legislature in November, representing District 14, which includes Bar Harbor, Lamoine, Mount Desert and the Cranberry Isles.

    BAR HARBOR — It didn't do much to change the outcome, but it was certainly an opportunity to showcase how town elections work. More than two dozen citizens gathered on Saturday to take a second look at a question brought before voters earlier in the month regarding cruise ship disembarkation. The recount tally for the town's Question 4 was 1714 yes and 1779 no with 160 blank ballots, cementing the passenger limits. A total of 3,653 ballots were cast in the election. On Nov.

    BAR HARBOR — Eleven teams started, but it was the “gang” from Hadley Point that emerged victorious and took home all the bragging rights. The Bar Harbor Chamber of Commerce held its annual bed races and participants showed up on Saturday for the fun. Spectators showed up, too, many in bathrobes, pajamas and with their hair still in curlers after coming straight from the morning’s shop-in-your-pajamas event that began in the wee hours.
