    Calumet — In March 2024, the Michigan Strategic Fund approved a $50 million grant to back a new copper mine in the western U.P. But as 2024 ended, Highland Copper, the Canadian company proposing the mine, had just one more hurdle to clear before it got the money: The Michigan Senate Appropriations Committee had to approve it. But between March and December, something changed in people’s perception of the mine. If you were paying attention, you probably saw an uptick in opposition online.

    The bleakness of a Michigan winter wears at your soul in ways no out-of-stater can understand. We all know the beautiful moments: Frozen mornings when the snow is new and pristine, shining in the bright sunlight. Ice clinging to every tree and sparkling like diamonds against the blue sky. It’s heavenly. Sadly, not all days are like this. Surrounded by icy waters, most winter days in Michigan are windy and bitter cold—bleak on a good day, severe on a bad day. And, come February, truly soul-sucking.

    My biggest red pill came when I moved to France after college graduation. I’d gone to three different colleges in four years, finally graduating from the University of Michigan with a film degree. All the while, I’d taken French. Every semester.
